Model flight simulator for the dome
Running on a real-time cluster, the dome theatre display of the Visualization Center C can be an interactive experience in a highly immersive environment for visitors. However, all current productions are either pre-rendered movies or real-time applications run by an operator. So apart from making requests to the operator, the possibilites for the audience to interact with the real-time applications are limited at present. Thus, there are exiting possibilites to create an interactive experience for visitors, to reach the full potential of the dome.
To get the visitors more involved in the show we propose a diploma work project to create a model flight simulator for the dome. In this, the simulator puts the user in the middle with a controller. It will be visualized on the dome from a tower view approach, so that the full view of the dome can be utilized.
The project involves researching if there is an existing API that is appropriate for running the simulator (i.e. open flight) or create such an API. There are currently no appropriate controllers implemented in the dome giving applicants an opportunity to look further into controller hardware (RC-controller, gamepads) and implementing it for the production.
The project can be extended to designing and implementing collaborative or competitive gameplay functionality.
