Abstract

Potential Fields and Influence Maps are two related techniques used in game AI programming e.g. to find strategic positions, to avoid obstacles, and to navigate. I will describe how they work in general, and how we have applied them in a variety of settings ranging from RTS games, through Ms Pac-Man, Infinite Super Mario, to Car racing in The Open Racing Car Simulator (TORCS).
