The increasing size and complexity of datasets originating from experiments or simulations raises new challenges for data analysis and visualization. Traditional visualization techniques help gather new insights, but the complexity of datasets achieves a level that hinders their direct understanding. It becomes important to identify and represent salient structures, also called features. Feature detection provides a simpler, abstract view of the data. Thereby one is confronted with three major questions: What are the interesting features in the data set; how can they be robustly extracted and how can they be intuitively displayed or communicated. Depending on the specific applications these challenges can vary significantly. In my talk I will focus on some examples from the area of flow and tensor field visualization illustrating different scenarios to deal with these questions.
