TNMM01, Introduction to Simulation (6 hp)

Course information

Course objective

The main goal of this course is to provide students with basic knowledge in computer based simulation and its use in the analysis of both discrete-event and continuous systems. In the course different purposes and application areas of computer based simulation are discussed. The course includes the series of laboratory assignments where students will acquire practical experience in ARENA simulation software. After completion of the course the student will be able to:

  • Describe fundamental concepts in computer-based simulation
  • List and explain advantages and disadvantages of simulation as analysis tool.
  • Model stochastic input data with probability distributions and assess quality of input models.
  • Build simulation models of production, service and transportation systems.
  • Perform analysis with simulation models and draw conclusions from stochastic simulations.
